Wednesday Words

I’ve noticed some new Midwest slang since arriving back to America. Here are a few of them:

1. “Let’s just be honest” or “I’m going to be honest with you.”

Either people are really letting their guard down or they are just using these words as a filler. Well, let’s just be honest, we’re probably over-using this phrase and cheapening its original meaning. But I’m going to be honest with you, I like being honest.

2. "That’s epic.”

Although I have not personally heard this phrase used yet, my friend promised me that it’s widely used to describe something awesome or perhaps horrific but interesting.

3. “Freakin’”

On Saturday, my friend and I paddled down the river on canoes and then stopped at a winery in St. Croix, Wisconsin with a group of young 20 / 30 somethings from the Twin Cities’ area. The group had several leaders who made a couple of announcements on the bus. When they used the word “Freakin’” it seemed the announcement became more cool or at least they seemed to think so. Now, I just need to figure out how and where to slip this word into my conversation, and I think the result will be pretty freakin’ sweet.

I am sure I'm missing some slang. Leave me a comment if you can think of some more.

If we are not careful what we say, we may cause "freakin" out.
